Size-dependent deformation in nanograins and nanotwins

چکیده
This paper discusses three aspects that have not been looked into within mechanistic model for rationalizing observed behavior of nanocrystalline materials. (1) For the nano-materials with low energy barrier to emit the trailing partial after the leading partial, such as nanocrystalline Al (nc-Al), both partials extend intra-granularly in strengthening effect. (2) In the transition grain-size region between strengthening and softening, the coupled effect of intra-granular dislocation extension and grain boundary deformation contributes to flow stress. (3) Reformulating the non-homogeneous nucleation model, the activation volume is further examined. VC 2013 American Institute of Physics. [http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4794539]

Nanotwins Formation in Accumulative Roll-Bonded Brass
Accumulative roll-bonding (ARB) is a severe plastic deformation process that is using rolling to produce ultrafine grains in coarse grained metallic materials. In this study, ARB has been applied on 70/30 brass up to 6 cycles at ambient temperature and non-lubricated conditions to apply a true strain up to 4.8 Von Mises strain. Microstructures of ARBed brass samples were characterized by scanni...

Nanotwins in nanocrystalline Mg–Alalloys: an insight from high-resolutionTEM and molecular dynamics simulation Report Title Twinning in hexagonal close-packed Mg alloys has been reported to be unfavorable when the grain size is reduced below a couple of microns and suppressed at the nanoscale. Using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, we present evidence of nanotwins (<1 nm) in na...
متن کاملNucleation of amorphous shear bands at nanotwins in boron suboxide
The roles of grain boundaries and twin boundaries in mechanical properties are well understood for metals and alloys. However, for covalent solids, their roles in deformation response to applied stress are not established. Here we characterize the nanotwins in boron suboxide (B6O) with twin boundaries along the {0111} planes using both scanning transmission electron microscopy and quantum mecha...
متن کاملA unified mechanistic model for size-dependent deformation in nanocrystalline and nanotwinned metals
We present a unified mechanistic model to rationalize size-dependent flow stress, activation volume and strain-rate sensitivity for metals with either nanocrystalline grains or nanoscale twins. The non-uniform partial dislocation model for flow stress [Asaro and Suresh, Acta Mater, Vol. 53, pp. 3369–3382, 2005; Gu et al., Scripta Mater, Vol. 62, pp. 361–364, 2010] is generalized here to conside...
متن کاملDual mechanisms of grain refinement in a FeCoCrNi high-entropy alloy processed by high-pressure torsion
An equiatomic FeCoCrNi high-entropy alloy with a face-centered cubic structure was fabricated by a powder metallurgy route, and then processed by high-pressure torsion. Detailed microscopy investigations revealed that grain refinement from coarse grains to nanocrystalline grains occurred mainly via concurrent nanoband (NB) subdivision and deformation twinning. NB-NB, twin-NB and twin-twin inter...
